Local first graders book wins honor

Efforts by a Cedarville Elementary School teacher to build confidence in her first graders culminated with a prize in a nationwide contest rewarding student-authored books.
Studentreasures Publishing honored “Super Special Me!” by Karen Augustine s class as a Top 50 book in the 2020-21 National Book Challenge, according to a news release.
The contest was open to more than 60,290 books submitted to Studentreasures for free publishing this past academic year, the release said. Finalists were selected based on originality, storyline and illustrations.
Augustine described their book as a precious keepsake. The students were inspired by how they see themselves and what they want to be when they grow up, the release said. ....

Area students wildlife paintings honored

Bellmont Middle School eighth graders earned state-level accolades with their wildlife watercolor paintings in Wildlife Forever s Fish Art Contest and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Junior Duck Stamp Contest, according to a news release.
Their accomplishments are more impressive considering they are beginner watercolor wildlife painters who use kindergarten paint sets, the release said. It noted the students learn about conservation, specie biomes, anatomy and mixing and lay ....

SACS' Downs to lead new graduate programs at Trine


ANGOLA — A prominent area educator and administrator will bring more than three decades of experience to establish and lead new graduate programs in Trine University s Franks School of Education beginning this fall.
Phil Downs, who announced plans to retire as superintendent of Southwest Allen County Schools earlier this year, will join Trine as director of education graduate programs and accreditation.
At Trine, Downs will oversee development of new graduate programs within the Franks School of Education, and ensure the school meets requirements for accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the Specialized Professional Association programs.
Downs was named Indiana s Superintendent of the Year in 2020. ....

B.C. s decision to extend the time period between the first and second doses has raised questions.
Today, B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry spoke again about the issue and answered questions about extending the interval between doses up to four months (16 weeks), which she had announced yesterday (March 1) during a news conference about Phase 2 and 3 of the B.C. immunization program.
Canada s chief science adviser Mona Nemer had told CBC News on March 1 that the extension of the interval is “possible” but that “it amounts right now to a basically population level experiment” that should be done with clinical trials. ....
