Knoxville joins Crime Stoppers so tipsters can remain anonymous

View Comments
In an effort to erase community hesitancy in reporting violent crimes, Knoxville has joined a program that puts up a barrier between tipsters and police.
City leaders on Wednesday announced the creation of the East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers Program. It's a tool to help investigators as so many of the city's murders go unsolved, including the deaths of two teens this year.
The national program allows anyone to provide anonymous information about criminal activity and pays them in cash if the information leads to an arrest.
That emphasis on anonymity was the selling point, Police Chief Eve Thomas said, and she listed it as the reason why community members who were scared to give information to police should feel comfortable using it.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — According to the Knoxville Police Department, 17 people died this year because of shootings in the city. They said that 13 people lost their lives in just the first two months of the year. The most recent one was Monday night in East Knoxville.
Cities across the U.S. are also experiencing an uptick in gun violence, which is pushing leaders to make changes. Some are saying that collaboration is key to solving the problem. Knoxville leaders are making significant efforts to stop gun violence and address community concerns, and Mayor Indya Kincannon emphasized collaboration to address the violence.

Perkins received a call from her daughter Monday morning at school asking if she could go home early. When she arrived home, Perkins said her daughter was missing hair and had marks on her face. For months, Thompson and Page’s relationship reportedly involved incidents of physical fights and suspensions from school.
“At the time, I felt like both of the kids needed a break,” Perkins said. “They needed some counseling. They were both dealing with issues mentally that they could have used some help in those areas.”

DA: No charges against officer in Tennessee school shooting

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The police officer who shot and killed a student in a Tennessee high school will not face criminal charges, a district attorney announced Wednesday.
Knox County District Attorney General Charme Allen said she determined the shooting of 17-year-old Anthony J. Thompson Jr. by Knoxville police Officer Jonathon Clabough was “justifiable” under Tennessee’s self-defense law. Allen added that she wouldn't press any other charges against the three other officers present at the time of the April 12 shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School in the East Tennessee city.
“It wasn’t an easy case; it wasn’t clean cut," Allen told reporters during a lengthy news conference where she released for the first time the various police body camera tapes, surveillance footage, 911 audio and other documents surrounding the shooting.
