Mayor Gary Christenson joined the Eritrean community in Malden to celebrate of one of the most important public holidays in Eritrea. May 24, 2021 marks 30 years of independence and the day serves to honor the heroic struggle and ultimate sacrifices of those involved in the war for independence against Ethiopia. Mayor Christenson presented a proclamation in honor of the holiday remarking on the contributions of the Eritrean Community that contribute to the rich history, culture and diversity of the City of Malden and have helped us build a better nation. The Eritrean Flag, a symbol of Eritrea s protracted struggle, resilience and long suffering was raised. All in attendance, including the Mayor participated in some traditional dancing. ....

Mayor Gary Christenson and Ward 5 City Councillor Barbara Murphy were on hand to celebrate Vietnam Veteran Robert E. Davidson s being honored with the Quilt of Honor for his dedicated service in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. The Quilts of Honor Program bestows a token of thanks, solace, and remembrance to those who have served. Rob worked as a medic providing medical care and treatment for wounded or injured troops doing everything necessary to keep troops alive until they could be evacuated. After the war, he returned to Malden, married is his wife Carol and together they raised two sons. Beginning his career as a grocery bagger, he quickly rose up in the ranks to store manager in charge of several Cerranti s Supermarkets. Mayor Christenson and Councillor Murphy presented Rob with a citation on behalf of the city and thanked him for his service and sacrifice to protect our freedom. ....

The state Department of Transportation, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and the city of Malden announced the completion of a series of quick-build multimodal roadway treatments along Florence Street in Malden, including shared bus-bicycle lanes, bicycle lanes and improved pedestrian crossings to enhance access to the MBTA Orange Line’s Malden Center Station and the surrounding downtown area.
These changes are a part of the Baker-Polito Administration’s Shared Streets & Spaces Program to facilitate quick-build projects that support safe, sustainable transportation modes in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The bus facilities are in effect immediately. ....
