TACOMA, Wash. Tacoma officials are looking at two properties as potential sites for shelters to address homelessness.
The proposal is part of Tacoma’s lofty goal to end homelessness in the city by November of this year. One property is a 13,000-square-foot empty lot at 8208 Pacific Ave, and the other is an undeveloped 33,000-square-foot site near 3901 33rd St. NE. ....

Two major homeless camps in Tacoma will get toilets, trash bins as part of city pilot

Temporary hand-washing stations, toilets and trash bins will appear near two major homeless encampments in Tacoma.
The city is expanding its Hygiene Pilot Program to a 34-tent encampment near the Evergreen State College campus along 6th and 7th Street in downtown Tacoma.
The utilities also will be installed near a 52-tent encampment under I-705 near A Street.
That will make three hygiene stations in Tacoma. The first one opened at 8th and Yakima and has been operating since March 5.

WASHINGTON – The National League of Cities (NLC), the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to helping local leaders build better communities, has convened a task force of mayors and councilmembers from across the country to reimagine how they ensure public safety in their communities.
Amid the multitude of challenges that cities, towns and villages faced in 2020 were calls to rethink and re-envision public safety in the wake of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of local law enforcement.
