Bellingham says it will clear homeless tent encampment near ball fields parking lot

Feb. 2 Homeless people who moved near Frank Geri Softball Fields after the city of Bellingham removed them from a downtown encampment last week were told Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 2, they must move by 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5. Neighbors react as Civic Athletic Complex tent camp grows

BELLINGHAM, Wash. Neighbors are reacting as the homeless tent camp at Civic Athletic Complex in Bellingham grows.
Bellingham Bay Gymnastics owner Jill Wolfson told KING5 the employees there became increasingly alarmed as dozens of tents and makeshift houses have gone up.
She said that people are just starting to trust and come back and the camp could be the thing that closes them down.
Britany Moncur works across the street from the new camp and said crime was already increasing in the neighborhood, adding that it just doesn’t seem safe anymore. ....

Police in Washington Clear Homeless Camp After Antifa Made Calls for Disruption
Law enforcement in Washington state on Thursday cleared a homeless camp that was dubbed an “occupation,” after the far-left Antifa network called for members to descend on the camp and confront officers.
Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood gave permission to police to clear the camp a day earlier than was previously announced because of information indicating calls to action were made to activists in the Pacific Northwest to try to stop the clearance.
“We took urgent, emergency action this morning outside Bellingham City Hall to protect the safety of all. … We acted today to reduce the risk of further injury, violence, and vandalism by those who are using the plight of our community’s most vulnerable to further their own agenda,” Fleetwood told reporters during a press conference. ....

Mayor Fleetwood says intel on outside protesters forced early action on homeless camp

Mayor Seth Fleetwood says outside agitators’ plans forced the city to take action against the City Hall homeless encampment a day early.
He told an afternoon news conference, “They put out a call throughout the Northwest to gather in Bellingham on Friday. We acted today to reduce the risk of further injury, violence and vandalism by those who are using the plight of our community’s most vulnerable to further their own agenda.”
He also said that recent developments at the camp raised concerns including “the presence of a fortified wooden structured built outside the front doors containing interior spaces and unknown items.” ....

The city of Bellingham has started clearing a camp outside City Hall where people without permanent shelter had set up tents and were living since mid-November to protest the lack of housing in the area. ....
