On June 21, council approved the final two readings of a rezoning bylaw allowing the Play Time and Rhyme preschool and child-care centre, 1613 26 Ave., to be used both as a child-care facility and now also as a residence. Measures needed to be taken to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Alberta, but there are no winners from the province having to bring in tougher restrictions, says Nanton’s mayor.
Premier Jason Kenney announced stronger public health measures May 4 to bend the curve, sustain small businesses, and protect the health-care system. As of end-of-day May 5, there were 24,156 active cases, with 666 people in hospital, including 146 in intensive care, with COVID-19.

After hearing from the chamber’s president, Nanton Town council asked administration April 5 to prepare a report on adding public washrooms along Highway 2 northbound.
Becky Scott, president of the Nanton and District Chamber of Commerce, presented remotely, by video, to the mayor and council during the April 5 meeting, held in the Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre’s warm room. Several councillors attended the meeting via video.

Organizers of minor sports say the province threw another curveball on the weekend, announcing the easing of some restrictions on Monday, which meant some school and minor sport training can go ahead as part of the first phase of reopening.
The announcement came as a surprise for Starbound Dance Centre artistic director Alita Van Mill, who said there’s been a real lack of communication from provincial health officials.
“We were receiving contradictory information all day and we had families asking us and we were just trying to do the right thing,” she said.
Starbound has been teaching classes online via Zoom since November. ....
