Weslaco mayor speaks out after Covid-positive migrants found in local hotel


A group of Covid-positive migrants were found staying at a hotel in Weslaco.
City Mayor David Suarez said the city found out about the temporary housing of the migrants on Thursday. They’re staying at the Texas Inn Hotel on north Texas Boulevard.
Mayor Suarez said the migrants were released from federal custody and into the hands of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley. The organization then moved the migrants into the hotel.
Suarez is now calling on the organization to let city officials know when they house Covid infected migrants in their city.
We take this matter very seriously, and our priority in Weslaco has been and continues to be the health and wellness of our community,” Mayor Suarez said in a statement. “We graciously ask Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley to help us protect all lives, including those most vulnerable to COVID-19 complications. ....

A partnership between multiple entities in the mid-Valley allowed 1,000 people to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Weslaco.
With the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services directing states to expand vaccine eligibility to those who work in primary, pre-primary and secondary schools, educators like Monte Alto ISD’s Iliana Gonzalez received her first vaccination Tuesday.
“I m super excited that I was able to get this vaccine. That means that I don t have to be in fear and I get to be one to one with the students,” Gonzalez – a behavioral special education teacher – said. “I have a little baby so my thing was always, okay I need to get vaccinated so me and my family can be protected. ....
