Dairy Management: good weather, calf care and what vaccines to give?

SHARING OPTIONS:
The priority task is to get as many stock out grazing now as quickly as possible.
Grass: The long-range forecast is for a continued spell of dry weather, which will be welcomed by all.
Those with a high proportion of the farm grazed (+60%) will be watching temperatures as much as rainfall as they count down the days to the second rotation and hope for high growth rates on the first-grazed paddocks. It is set to get a bit cooler into next week, which could dampen down growth rates slightly.

Strategies to increase the length of grazing season for spring and autumn-calving cows

March 15, 2021 6:30 am
Soil conditions and inclement weather are two of the biggest limitations affecting the extension of the grazing season on Irish dairy farms.
Over 50% of soils in the Republic of Ireland are classified as podzols, gleysols or histosols.
These soils are slow draining and practically impervious, thereby preventing full-time turnout to pasture in early spring and late autumn, due to a high risk of poaching damage.
Teagasc researchers Michael O’Donovan and Emer Kennedy, completed a trial in order to investigate ways in which the grazing season can be extended and therefore increase the proportion of grazed grass in the diet. ....
