The Day - Monday Norwich food distribution canceled - News from southeastern Connecticut

Norwich  The weekly Monday food distribution by Connecticut Food Bank/Foodshare will be canceled Monday due to the pending snowstorm.
The distribution will not be rescheduled, and the next Norwich distribution will be Monday, Feb. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at the former Foxwoods employee parking lot at 28 Stonington Road-Route 2 in Norwich.
The food bank will hold its New London weekly food distribution from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church at 10 Huntington St.

The Day - Long lines for first weekly food distribution event in Norwich - News from southeastern Connecticut


Norwich  Vehicles snaked along the entire perimeter of a former 33-acre Foxwoods employee parking lot and backed up onto Route 2 Monday morning for the start of the first weekly Connecticut Food Bank/Foodshare food distribution here. 
Organizers and volunteers arrived at 7 a.m. to set up for the planned 9:30 a.m. start, but with vehicles already in line, they opened the distribution lines an hour early and kept it open through the noon closing time. Lines eased up by about 11 a.m. but picked up again in the final hour. No one counted, but organizers had 40,000 pounds of food on hand to distribute to about 1,500 families. Leftovers were repacked into the Connecticut Food Bank trucks for the next distribution site. ....

New London  At the walk-up food distribution site at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church on Huntington Street, recipients on Friday collected prepackaged bags of canned goods and pasta, a 5 pound bag of potatoes, two bags of apples, a bag containing three or four pounds of frozen ground turkey, along with two or three bottles of juice and a half-gallon of milk.
“I haven’t used a food pantry in 15 years,” said Kasey Belair of Waterford. “I’m grateful for everything.”
Belair, whose hours were cut at Mohegan Sun Casino, said her husband is retired and her mother is disabled. Much of the food she received will be for her mother. Belair said she was surprised at the quality of the food in the distribution, especially the frozen ground turkey. ....

The Day - Norwich seeks volunteers to help with weekly food distributions - News from southeastern Connecticut


Norwich  Logistics are being worked out this week for the city to join the statewide weekly food distribution network established by the Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare starting next Monday at the former Foxwoods casino employee parking lot at 28 Stonington Road-Route 2 in Norwich.
Mayor Peter Nystrom said Monday that officials from Food Bank, local coordinators for the distribution, Mashantucket Pequot tribal and Norwich police all walked the expansive vacant parking lot on Friday to work out logistics for the site and to prepare for next Monday’s first distribution.
Nystrom said local agencies coordinating the distribution are seeking about 40 volunteers to staff six to eight drive-thru stations to place different types of food into recipients’ vehicles.
