In this Research & Commentary, Samantha Fillmore examines a House Bill in Massachusetts that would allow for cities and towns to opt into a local excise tax on fuel.
Massachusetts lawmakers are considering levying additional gas taxes on the local level with House Bill 3039. If passed, the bill would allow any city or town to impose a local excise tax on the sale of fuel and special fuels to retail dealers. This would be in addition to the state’s current 24-cent-per-gallon tax on fuel.
According to HB 3039, any city or town that imposes this local excise tax shall first establish a Municipal Fuel Excise Transportation and Stormwater Fund prior to levying the additional excise tax. This fund would be divided into three spending areas. The first being for the purposes of maintenance, upkeep, and construction of roads, bridges, sidewalks, and public parking areas, or roadside ....

Progressive urban leaders are ramping up efforts to “defund” the police, put convicted violent felons back on the street while refusing to prosecute or even enforce laws against burglary, shoplifting and drug crimes.
Then these same progressives blame the rising crime and homicide rates in their cities not on their policies, but on guns.
Despite reams of evidence to the contrary, They, like President Biden, claim to believe restricting firearms will solve crime. Murders are up 14% and non-fatal shootings up 8% according to the latest numbers from Baltimore police.
So what will it take to stop the violence?
This weekend was a Ceasefire Weekend in Baltimore City. Unfortunately it did not cease city violence.
This call for peace coming after an especially violent few days.
The latest numbers released by police are from last Saturday showing 100 murders this year and 196 non-fatal shootings.
Since last Saturday though, 10 more people have been killed in Baltimore.
110 people are dead just in the first five months of the year.
“It’s not the case that we can just stop the crime problem by going away from policing. We’ve been doing that for 10 years and it’s just not working,” says Stephen Walters, the chief economist with the Maryland Public Policy Institute. ....

It s not often you see a politician ask the FCC to step in to punish a news station. And for good reason: the First Amendment. Politicians are welcome to fight speech they don t like with
more speech, but they shouldn t be calling for a federal government investigation of a TV station just because they don t like the slant of the stories about them.
Baltimore (MD) City State s Attorney Marilyn Mosby thinks a local Fox affiliate is unfairly portraying her and her official doings. Rather than just accept that this is part of being in the business of politics, Mosby is asking the FCC to ask Fox to stop being Fox.
