Developer unveils plans for Philadelphia waterfront project

New York City-based developer The Durst Organization last week unveiled plans for a mixed-use project on the Philadelphia waterfront that blends new housing and retail with the preservation of some of the city s most historic locations.
The 26-story project, designed by Handel Architects, will include 360 apartments, 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, a new park and improved connections to the historic Wood Street steps and Delaware River trail, according to a press release emailed to Construction Dive. A Durst spokesperson told Construction Dive that the company has not disclosed the project cost.
The development, which will be constructed on a 1.6-acre parcel that Durst purchased from the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation in 2019, is a critical component of the DRWC s master plan to revitalize a 6-mile length of Philadelphia s Central Delaware River waterfront. ....

Source/Handel ArchitectsA significant feature of Durst s plan is to preserve the most historically significant parts of the West Shipyard, one of Philadelphia s most complete archaeological sites documenting shipbuilding activity from the 17th century through the mid-19th century. The shipyard, located beneath the surface parking lot, is on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places.
In recent months, Durst has conducted public events showcasing artifacts found during an initial series of excavations. Additional events are planned pending the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of the preservation effort, the development will improve access to the historic Wood Street Steps between Water and Front streets, just west of the proposed tower, the developer said. A ceremony to mark the joining of two SmiltynÄ Ferry Terminal ferry hull blocks took place on 8 April. This event signifies the commencement of a new stage of the vessel construction. According to the press center of Lithuania’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, the new ferry is scheduled to be released to water in July.
A contract worth EUR 6.5 million between the company SmiltynÄs perkÄla AB and Western Baltija Shipbuilding, part of Western Shipyard group, was signed in May 2020 and the works started in September.
