SMYRNA The West Jefferson Pike widening project should improve commuter safety, officials said Friday while celebrating the project groundbreaking.
It means a lot to me, said state Rep. Mike Sparks, a Smyrna Republican who used to own a car dealership on West Jefferson Pike. I ve seen countless wrecks, wrecks right out here in front of my former business.
Sparks joined other state and Smyrna officials Friday to commemorate the long-waited Jefferson Pike widening project. The existing two-lane road dealt with many fatalities, said Sparks, who expects conditions to improve once the state completes the widening work by an estimated July 2024 from Nissan Drive to Interstate 840. ....

Interstate 840 eastbound could be seen backing up on Wednesday morning after a single-vehicle crash closed it down.
Interstate 840 eastbound in Rutherford County was shut down near the West Jefferson Pike exit after a single-vehicle crash, the Tennessee Department of Transportation reported.
The wreck was first reported around 7:15 a.m. Westbound traffic also experienced rubbernecking delays. The wreck was cleared around 9:45 a.m.
No details on injuries or what led up to the crash were immediately available Wednesday morning. ....
