Irene Hallie Mentzel passed away in New York City on June 23, 2021 at age 92.
Hallie was born in 1929 in New York City. She was a second-generation New Yorker, the daughter of Miriam and Dr. Leopold Jaches. Dr. Jaches was a radiologist, and was instrumental in starting the radiology department at Mount Sinai Hospital. Hallie attended the Dalton School
from nursery school through high school. She worked at B. Altman during her high school years. 
Hallie attended Barnard College, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in biology. In 1951, she married Alvin J. Mentzel (Al). Al was a WWII veteran and CPA who worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers. They lived in New York City until 1967, when they moved to Maplewood, N.J. Hallie and Al moved back to New York City in 1980, and subsequently moved to West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard, where they lived until Al died in 2006. Hallie moved back to New York City in 2009. For Alexandra Pratt, the new director of the West Tisbury Free Public Library, the spark for her career was the simple act of being taken to the library regularly by her mother during her childhood in rural, northwestern Connecticut. Now that her dream has come to fruition on the Vineyard, she is amazed that this one Island has six incredible libraries – and grateful she has worked at five of them.
Q. How did you originally fall in love with libraries?
A. Every Sunday, growing up, my mother took us to the local library and I’d check out a huge stack of books. It’s always been a safe place for me, and a place I really loved. In college at Smith, I studied English and history, thinking I’d become an archivist, preserving historic books and documents. But I discovered being in the archives is lonely work, and I soon realized I wanted to work around people. ....
