West Island Community Shares distributes a record $1.4 Million


For the first time in its history, and thanks to a wave of generosity by friends, families, neighbors, and partners, West Island Community Shares announced in a May 5 release (continued below) a record-breaking $1.4 Million being distributed to the community following their annual fundraising campaign, known as the West Island Solidarity Fund.

The Solidarity Fund was set up not only to provide financial support to meet urgent needs of the community during what was a very difficult year, but also to give community organizations the financial support they need to provide crucial services during the recovery period.
The pandemic has shone the light on three areas of vulnerability in our region that needed additional support, such as at-risk families, vulnerable women and underrepresented cultural populations. Therefore, the fund distribution committee recommended to add Maison Caracol, the West Island Women’s Shelter, the West Island Women’s Centre, as well ....

Inspired by George Floyd's death, Montreal poet tackles racism

A piece of work by a Montreal poet describing the oppressive nature of racism is so powerful, versions of it have been circulating the internet.
I Am A Witness is told from the point of view of a bystander at the scene of George Floyd s death at the hands of a Minneoapolis police officer. It s creator, spoken word artist Roen Higgins, first performed the piece at a virtual town hall meeting of the West Island Black Community Association.
“I am a witness. I am a witness to another black man saying I can’t breath, ” the poem begins. “His last breath stolen by the person who’s supposed to serve and protect. Shouting for his momma while an officer forcibly kneels on his neck.” ....

WIBCA GETS 15K FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH:Throughout the years, WIBCA and its volunteers have been dedicated to promoting cultural and educational activities to all–regardless of gender, race or ethnic origin. It is important to acknowledge all their hard work in building a vibrant community and offer our support in their efforts to overcome racism,” said Carlos J. Leitão. The Robert-Baldwin MNA decided to begin Black History Month by donating $15,000 to the West Island Black Community Association.The funds are earmarked for the association’s drop-in youth centre. Announced last September, WIBCA has launched a Capital Campaign drive to raise $250,000 to renovate its drop-in centre to increase its services to area youth. ....

Racist Zoom Call Attack Leaves Montreal Black Community Group Shaken

Members of a Black community association in Montreal are deeply hurt and disappointed after strangers hijacked their Zoom meeting, spewing racial slurs and profanities.
The incident happened on Friday during the West Island Black Community Association’s annual general meeting, which was open to the public for transparency. It was supposed to be a safe space to discuss community matters.
About six minutes in, several male voices were heard repeating the N-word and other racialized insults, and a young person wearing a pink balaclava appeared, mocking Black Lives Matter. The chat was also filled with profanity. HuffPost Canada has viewed a recording of the meeting. ....
