Over 300 runners lined up Sunday for what s known as the world s oldest and most challenging endurance trail races: the Western States Endurance Run. Steeped in grueling tradition, the race has begun near Lake Tahoe in Olympic Valley and ended in Auburn at Placer High School for nearly four decades. It s 18,000 feet of climbing and 23,000 feet of descent, so it is definitely a net downhill, said Craig Thornley, race director for the Western States Endurance Race.Runners who traveled to the region from all over the globe had a 30-hour time limit to complete the 100-mile race.Of the over 300 runners, 202 completed the trail race, with the fastest time clocking in at 14 hours and 46 minutes, an average of just over an eight minute mile for each of the 100 miles ran.Though treacherous, Sudheer Maremanda, a participant who finished, traveled to Olympic Valley from Washington State.
