Some West Virginia residents will see a 6.12% power rate increase following a decision from the West Virginia Public Service Commission.
Residents who receive electricity from Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power companies will see the new monthly surcharge on monthly bills. The commission approved the increase for the companies to recover costs related to capital investments made between rate cases.
The companies serve about 463,000 customers within 23 West Virginia counties.
“With this Order, the Commission is underscoring the need for utility companies to invest in their infrastructure while we stabilize rates and avoid frequent large base rate increases,” PSC Chair Charlotte Lane said in a statement. ....

Cabell Commissioners send letters in protest of utility rate increases

HUNTINGTON — The Cabell County Commission voted to send two letters to the West Virginia Public Service regarding rate increase requests at two utility companies.
All three commissioners — Jim Morgan, Nancy Cartmill and Kelli Sobonya — approved the letters, which protest possible rate increases at West Virginia American Water and American Electric Power, at their Thursday meeting.
Both letters are addressed to Public Service Commission Chairman Charlotte R. Lane. The letter regarding West Virginia American Water says the proposed rate would add an average of $11.26 to customer’s bills, meaning an extra $330 a year.
“This pandemic is being blamed for a rise in cost of everything from gas to food to building materials,” the letter said. “An increase in utility bills is just going to further hurt our constituents and their families in already trying times.” ....

Local leaders, residents sound off on WV American Water's proposed rate hike

CHARLESTON — West Virginia American Water’s request for water and wastewater rate increases has drawn the ire of local residents and officials.
The Kanawha County Commission and members of Charleston City Council are among those objecting to West Virginia American’s rate hike requests filed April 30 with state utility regulators.
The company is seeking an additional $40.8 million in annual revenue for water and wastewater operations combined, 26.1% more than the company’s current rates.
County Commission President Kent Carper weighed in on West Virginia American’s request for the rate hike during the commission’s meeting Thursday.
“It is easy to sit here and complain as utility companies just recklessly, unfairly raise people’s rates,” Carper said. “But in this case, it’s just true.” ....
