State officials spent a moment Wednesday observing the five-year anniversary of deadly flooding in West Virginia. The rushing water took 23 lives, destroyed businesses and left hundreds of families without a safe place to live. In the wake of the tragedy, the need was so great entire new levels of bureaucracy were created … which subsequently had to be reined in and put back on track by the West Virginia National Guard.

West Virginia legislature approves $250 million in spending in special session

The West Virginia Legislature passed 21 bills, which would provide about $250 million of funding for various projects throughout the state.
Gov. Jim Justice called the lawmakers into session to allocate money that was made available thanks to a budget surplus. The Senate passed all 24 of the governor’s proposals, but the House only passed 21 of the bills and did not hold a vote on the other three.
Allocations include an additional $24 million to the Department of Education for increasing the school construction fund for fiscal year 2022, $42 million for parks to expand access for guests, and $30 million for the West Virginia Development Office, which is designed to attract more businesses to the state. ....

CHARLESTON — Gov. Jim Justice called the West Virginia Legislature into session on Thursday and requested $250 million be allocated throughout the state government, including to education, tourism, and more.
“The special session call requests that the Legislature consider over $250 million in supplementary appropriations that Gov. Justice has divided into over 20 different initiatives, among other considerations. …. A few of those initiatives include upgrades and expansions to several West Virginia State Parks, upgrades to the Elk River Trail, allocating initial funding to the Economic Development Authority’s Closing Fund, upgrades to correctional facil ....
