President Weah Hails Millennium Challenge Compact’s Impact on Liberia

(Monrovia, Liberia):  The President of the Republic, His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah, says is administration and the people of Liberia are satisfied with the impact of the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC). The Compact, implemented by the Millennium Challenge Account Liberia, has ended its work after jumpstarting the country’s electricity and road sectors.
President Weah acknowledged that Liberia was fortunate to have been among a very few countries that was eligible for a Millennium Challenge Compact.
 
The President said Liberia’s selection puts it in what he terms a “privileged group of beneficiary countries that have performed with distinction,” in terms of democratic rights and the control of corruption as reflected in the MCC country scorecard. ....

Millennium Challenge Compact for Liberia Ends

The Millennium Challenge Account-Liberia has announced the end, effective January 21, 2021, of the Millennium Challenge Compact between the United States Government and the Government of Liberia.
The Compact, during its operation, improved the amount and reliability of electricity supply, more than doubled the number of homes with electricity access and left the Liberian government with a sustainable, data-driven, road maintenance system.
With the signing of the Compact in October 2015, the United States Government, acting through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), provided US$257 million to help increase access to more reliable and affordable electricity; and improve the planning and execution of routine, periodic, and emergency road maintenance. ....

MONROVIA – ESBI Engineering & Facility Management running of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) was filled with contentions, especially amid concerns that there were Liberians with the competence to run the facility, but little could be done about it – their contract was under the auspices of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) as part of the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant Rehabilitation Project.
