Crestview, Florida to demolish and replace run-down houses in high-crime area

CRESTVIEW With the goal of creating space for safe, affordable housing, city officials hope to soon see old, rickety houses in a high-crime part of town demolished and cleared away.
The Crestview City Council in March unanimously approved paying a little more than $106,000 to local businessman Jay Woodbury for the purchase of eight residential lots.
Four of the parcels are vacant lots on North Savage Street, and four contain a total of six houses, all of which will be razed, on West Bowers and West Field avenues.
“We’ve had a very high call volume (for police assistance) within this Field-Bowers’ area,” City Manager Tim Bolduc said recently. “So it’s taking something that’s currently being used that way and then turning it into something that is legitimate and affordable housing. We can make sure that we provide housing for our citizens, but that we’re doing it in a way where it’s safe for them to live in.” ....

Crestview Commons shopping center might open in spring of next year

CRESTVIEW The Crestview Commons mixed-use development is expected to open in the spring of 2022.
City Manager Tim Bolduc shared that information with the City Council on Monday while providing an update on the project.
The Benchmark Group of Amherst, New York, is the developer of the estimated $14 million project. The company’s plans include the development of about 73,000 square feet of inline retail space plus two national sit-down restaurant chains northwest of State Road 85 (Ferdon Boulevard) and Interstate 10.
The project site is part of an almost 22-acre area bounded by S.R. 85 to the east, the old Golden Asian Buffet restaurant near Hospital Drive to the north, Price-Gregory Way to the west and Mirage Avenue, Chick-fil-A and vacant land to the south. ....

Old Spanish Trail Festival to return to Crestview, Florida

CRESTVIEW City officials plan to partner with the nonprofit Main Street Crestview Association to revive the Old Spanish Trail Festival in 2021.
The fest took place in Crestview each spring for many years before it ended more than a decade ago.
City Manager Tim Bolduc told the City Council on Dec. 14 that the COVID-19 pandemic has “leveled the playing field” for Crestview, because while other communities have canceled or postponed various events, Crestview has continued to host many activities.
In partnership with the Main Street organization, city events that took place this year included the Fourth of July celebration and the Fall Festival, as well as more recent events such as the Jingle Bell Jog race and the Christmas parade. ....
