Alpena High School plans senior event after prom canceled | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA Alpena High School has canceled its prom but is planning a separate event for graduating seniors.
High School Principal Tom Berriman on Monday shared on Twitter that prom was cancelled because of the state health department’s current guidelines. Later that day, a permit to allow a festival for the Class of 2021 in downtown Alpena was approved by Alpena Municipal Council.
“Current Michigan Department of Health and Human Service orders do not allow us to hold lock-in or prom,” Berriman said, noting the orders expire on May 24 and the high school’s graduation is on May 23. ....

ALPENA Structures lost or damaged by fire can become a public health issue, or blight if corrective action isn’t taken soon after the blaze.
To encourage quick action by property owners who own properties impacted by fires, the Alpena Municipal Council is considering an ordinance it hopes will motivate property owners of burned structures to promptly clean up the fire’s aftermath. ....

ALPENA The City of Alpena tries to keep enough money in the bank to cover between 10% and 20% of its annual general fund expenses.
The Alpena Municipal Council was told on Monday the city’s savings had jumped up to 30% of expenses.
At the end of the 2019-20 budget year, which ended on June 30, the city had $3.1 million in unassigned cash, enough money to cover the city’s expenses for 117 days.
City Manager Rachel Smolinski said conservative budgeting and limited spending early in the COVID-19 pandemic helped city savings build to that amount, as did several capital improvement projects that were pushed back. ....
