Excitement is in the air. People have been talking about it. The news has been preparing us for it for months. Soon, we will be hearing from the creatures themselves. We are talking about the emergence of periodical cicadas. ....

Cicadas will soon pop out in Michiana. But you may not see too many of them.


A few of the 17-year cicadas emerged from the ground this week in southern Indiana, and it may be just days before the so-called Brood X pops out and makes a racket in Michiana.
But, here at the northern edge of their range across the Midwest and East, Brood X’s loud buzzing and red eyes will likely make isolated and spotty appearances.
You may wonder where they are.
In St. Joseph County’s far northeast corner, Connie Stone won’t wonder. She’s lived among prime cicada habitat — trees — for at least two of the prior emergences.
“I don’t like to go outside when they’re here, they’re so bothersome,” she said. “They swarm and you can’t get away from them.” ....
