Espinal has served on the City Council for less than two years. Espinal, a Democrat, was first elected to the City Council, replacing outgoing Council President Luis Aponte in a Special Election on November 5, 2019. He won the seat with 282 votes against Independent opponent Jeffrey Lemire’s 17 votes. However, he first had to emerge out of a hotly-contested Democratic primary that fall for the seat which he did with 36% of the vote.
