I see the UCP’s war on the poor continues. With the news that Kananaskis will now have user fees, life in Alberta continues to get more expensive.
Using Don Braid’s figure of 2.1 million vehicle visits last year, let’s assume 1.1 million purchase day passes raising $16.5 million and the remaining one million purchase an annual pass raising $90 million. That is over $100 million to go to park improvements. Even if the UCP fees convince 50 per cent of Albertans to no longer use an amenity that is paid for by their taxes, that is still over one million vehicle visits raising over $50 million, far exceeding the $11.5 million promised for park upgrades. ....

Guilty plea for George in federal gun case


Kory Lee George, 32, has pleaded guilty to a federal firearm charge.
George, of Monkton, admitted to possessing a firearm despite being a convicted felon. He is also facing a first-degree murder charge from the state in connection to the shooting death of his stepfather in 2019.
He is expected to face a 6- to 8-year federal sentence according to a plea agreement outlined at a March 3 hearing in Burlington.
George, a five-time convicted felon, admitted he possessed a 12-gauge shotgun in Vermont on Aug. 2, 2019, after it had been reported stolen from a camp in St. Lawrence County in upstate New York. ....

Owner optimistic as former UPS Store moves forward as Derby-Port Press

NEWPORT Despite being thrust into the spotlight over the last few days and having to end his franchise with UPS, store owner Michael Desautels is optimistic about the future of his business in downtown Newport.
Desautels says that moving forward, Derby-Port Press, a print company he purchased in 2018, will continue to operate from the same location on Main Street.
As of Friday, the store was open and welcoming customers inside.
Derby-Port Press will focus on the printing aspect of the business, which Desautels says is not all that different from the way things were before he came under fire for choosing not to wear a mask inside his store. ....

Man gets five years for distribution of heroin, crack cocaine in Manchester

Vermont Business Magazine The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont stated that Torrie Smith, 31, was sentenced to five years imprisonment by US District Court Judge William K Sessions III. Smith previously pled guilty to possession with intent to distribute, heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine. Judge Sessions also sentenced Smith to a four-year term of federal supervised release, which will begin after Smith completes his five-year prison term. At the time of his arrest, in April 2019, Smith resided in both Manchester, Vermont and Hartford Connecticut.
According to court records, on three separate instances, law enforcement seized significant quantities of drugs from cars in which Smith was either driving or was a passenger: ....
