The committee Wiscasset voters nodded last month to study the schools’ future is near forming. Thursday night, July 8, the selectboard, school committee, Town Manager Dennis Simmons and Superintendent of Schools Terry Wood planned the panel’s makeup and how to have it do what voters asked.

Wiscasset schools’ maintenance and transportation director John Merry told the school committee Tuesday night, April 27, he has spoken with someone about bus service and would be again, then he would talk with Superintendent of Schools Terry Wood.
Committee member Indriani Demers asked if Merry was referring to contracted bus service. Yes, said member Michelle Blagdon. “We’re having such a hard time filling (driver) positions. We’re always short . we’ve spent the last four years being short on bus drivers. This way, we’d at least know our buses are all covered. We won’t have to pull staff to drive buses.” ....

Treats the staffs of Wiscasset Elementary and Middle High schools received last week were a thank you from parents. And staff members told Wiscasset Newspaper they appreciated it.
WES fifth grade teacher Justin Stygles said in an email response, “For one who is trying to kick a Coke-a-cola habit, the apple juice was a welcome gesture. It s been a trying year, since March 13. There s a lot of tension, which is hard for all of us, including parents, to deal with. The token of appreciation is humbling and appreciated. ....

Tuitioning out Wiscasset’s high schoolers may not save money, and will not attract families, Superintendent of Schools Terry Wood said Jan. 26 as selectmen and the school committee talked in a Zoom workshop with multiple topics and a prevailing theme: The two panels should keep talking.
On the tuitioning out issue, Wood said, “I do not agree that that’s what’s best for Wiscasset . Whenever you start closing schools, you start ruining the community . It’s not necessarily going to be cheaper.” Special education and other costs also factor in, she said. “It’s not just tuition.” And Wood predicted if the high school grades were tuitioned out, some families would pull their elementary school students. ....
