The surge of film projects coming to North Carolina, the potential for expansion of the state’s film incentive and the need to train more people for careers in the industry were among the topics discussed at this week’s N.C. Film Forum session.

“State of the State” was the theme for Wednesday evening s session. Panelists were Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission; Susi Hamilton, chairwoman of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Film, Television and Digital Streaming; and Eric Johnson, a senior vice president at Trailblazer Studios in Raleigh. RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) - With the pandemic adding challenges to educational progress for numerous students this past year, many families have been wondering how their children will ever catch up.
The three bills signed into law by Governor Cooper Friday will help bridge the growing gap in academic achievement.
The Excellent Public Schools Act of 2021 uses in-classroom instruction, reading camps, other reading interventions, and data collection to provide consistent, high-quality literacy instruction that will address gaps in reading literacy for Pre-K through 3rd grade students. ....

RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) - Sen. Michael Lee (R-New Hanover) is one of the primary sponsors of a bill to expand North Carolinaâs Opportunity Scholarship program, which provides funding for low-income or special needs students to attend private schools across the state.
Senate Bill 671 is also sponsored by Sen. Deanna Ballard (R-Watauga), who along with Sen. Lee co-chairs of the Senateâs Education Committee, and Sen. Amy Galey (R-Alamance), who is also a member of the same committee. It was filed today in the state senate. ....

Senate bill would increase maximum amount families receive for school vouchers

In a move that’s sure to spark controversy, Senate Republicans on Wednesday filed a bill to increase school voucher awards by $2,300.
Parents use state vouchers to help pay tuition at private and religious schools. Currently, families can receive awards of up to $4,200. Senate Bill 671 would push the maximum award to $6,500.
Sens. Michael Lee (R-New Hanover) and Deanna Ballard (R-Watauga), who co-chairs the Senate Education Committee, sponsored SB 671.
“It’s clear that after a year of being forced into ‘virtual learning’ working-class families want a bigger say in their child’s education and Opportunity Scholarships can give them back their voice,” Lee said in a statement. ....

NC Excellent Public Schools Act of 2021 approved

Raleigh, N.C. – The North Carolina State Senate today unanimously approved the “Excellent Public Schools Act of 2021.” The bill covers in-classroom instruction, reading camps, other reading interventions, data collection, and brings together the higher education and pre-K communities to help ensure consistency and quality in literacy instruction.
Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) introduced the bill along with Senate Education Committee Chairs Sens. Deanna Ballard (R-Watauga) and Michael Lee (R-New Hanover). The bill builds on the 2019 legislation to implement evidence-based policies to enhance and facilitate a successful reading curriculum for North Carolina students. ....
