St. Louis County Police Chief Mary Barton Retires

/
St. Louis County Police Chief Mary Barton worked in the department for 43 years.
St. Louis County Police Chief Mary Barton is retiring after more than four decades of service.
Barton announced her plans Friday during the St. Louis County Board of Police Commissioners meeting. Barton said in a statement that it s been a privilege to serve as chief for the past year.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for 43 wonderful years of service here at the department,” Barton said. “I wish the best to whoever follows in my footsteps and I will always wish the best for this police department.” ....

St. Louis County Council Votes No Confidence In Police Chief

Originally published on April 13, 2021 11:25 pm
The St. Louis County Council says it has no confidence in Police Chief Mary Barton.
Members of the council voted 4-3 along party lines Tuesday night to adopt a resolution that read in part, “Chief Barton is incapable of guiding the St. Louis County Police Department in the right direction, and therefore the faith and trust bestowed onto her is unrecoverable.”
In taking the vote, the council joined the Ethical Society of Police and other police reform advocacy organizations in asking for new leadership so the department can address its racism issues.
The St. Louis County Police Officers Association said in a statement that it shares many of the same concerns as the Ethical Society and the county council. The union is currently asking its 950 members how to respond. That could include an official vote of no confidence. ....

Hartmann: St. Louis County's Soap Opera Police Board Needs to Call 911

The St. Louis County Board of Police Commissioners bungling doesn t get enough attention.
The best defense for beleaguered St. Louis County Police Chief Mary Barton is that she had nothing to do with hiring Police Chief Mary Barton.
On the job for slightly more than ten months, Barton’s tenure can charitably be described as a no-good, dirty-rotten experience for all concerned. But it’s the St. Louis County Board of Police Commissioners not Barton that owns the curious decision to miscast her in a role for which she’s so obviously ill suited.
Last spring, the board inexplicably passed over an obviously more qualified candidate in Lt. Col. Troy Doyle, widely viewed within the department (and on the outside) as the likely successor to retiring Chief Jon Belmar. Doyle is suing the county for race discrimination over having been snubbed for a white candidate with less rank and experience in Barton. ....

Hartmann: St. Louis County Police Commander's Lawsuit Lays Bare Racism

St. Louis police Lt. Col. Troy Doyle (left) and County Executive Sam Page.
I could not serve as an impartial juror in police Lt. Col. Troy Doyle s race discrimination lawsuit against St. Louis County.
The searing allegations put forth in the suit released last week by attorney Jerome Dobson are just that allegations and the absence of the defendants response isn t an implied concession. That s why there s a judicial system.
But if you know lots of the players and background either personally or through the news it s impossible to pretend to have an unbiased view. What happened to Doyle is more than believable: It s both a confirmation and indictment of systemic racism in the county in general and the police department in particular. ....
