Arts Beat: SLO Arts adapt to reopening – say they should have same guidelines as movie theaters

On March 5, the State of California announced outdoor concerts and events can resume with modifications and safety precautions.
The performing arts community in San Luis Obispo has been eager to start performing again. Still, many are frustrated that the state will allow indoor movie theaters to open but will restrict live performances to outdoor venues.
“The movie theaters were the one thing where there was really this kind of direct parallel, and the idea that those two industries are so far apart on the tier system is ludacrous to us,” said Kevin Harris, SLO Repertory Theater’s managing artistic director. ....

The San Luis Obispo Performing Arts Center is asking the community to take a survey as they look forward to the return of live events.
The Central Coast Coalition of Arts Leaders has developed a seven minute audience perception survey to help with the process.
Organizers say community input is critical.
The survey is available until March 15 with questions asking about your relationship to the arts and live entertainment community, as well as which venues have you attended a performance or event in the last two years. ....

Three months after the local performing arts industry issued a plea to health officials for more clear and reasonable regulations to follow during the pandemic, arts groups are now allowed to record live performances without audiences, as well as host drive-in, movie theater-style concerts. But that s about it.
In November, the SLO County Public Health Department revised its regulatory framework for the performing arts sector to permit those limited activities a move that followed statewide complaints that the industry was ignored in California s Blueprint for a Safer Economy.
