During Central Coast visit, calls for 15% voluntary reduction in usage
During a visit to the Central Coast Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom expanded a state of emergency drought relief order to include Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.
The emergency order now covers 50 of the state’s 58 counties, and makes it easier for agencies to get state and federal aid, as well as to take steps to conserve water.
Speaking at Lake Lopez, the governor also asked people to help conserve water, setting a goal of a 15% reduction in usage.
The governor’s call for water conservation as of right now is voluntary. Newsom says if the state can cut usage by the 15%, it would save about 850,000 acre feet of water annually. That’s enough water to supply 1.7 million residents for a year.

It will be a mild weather day for the central coast. The main difference will be the gradual increase in cloud cover throughout the afternoon, coupled with mild winds that will likely stay below 10 miles per hour.
Temperatures along the coast will continue to range from the 50s to the 60s with cooler conditions along the north coast. Over valley locations, daytime highs will mainly range from the low to mid-60s.
We have a pretty mild day ahead of us with increasing cloud cover and daytime highs from the upper 50s to mid-60s. A cold front is still on track to make way over the Central Coast Thursday, which could result in light rain. A tenth of an inch to a third of an inch of rain produced with Sunday night through Monday's storm. Scattered showers will continue overnight with low snow levels. It is windy out there with wind advisories continuing along the south coast and SB County mountains until 9AM Tuesday. A slow warming trend will begin Tuesday with near normal temperatures by Thursday. There's a chance of rain along the Central Coast late Thursday into Friday, otherwise dry conditions expected into the weekend.
