Adapting to Extreme Climate Change Poses a Challenge to Many Farmers

Severe weather conditions are affecting agriculture in the United Kingdom, but according to a new study, a majority of farmers are yet to prioritize the adaptability to the impacts of the climate emergency.

According to all the farmers who participated in the study, they had witnessed or experienced problems caused by extreme weather, like prolonged dry spells or heavy in recent years, and anticipated these to increase further.
Several farmers were also concerned about the effect of drought and heat on the growth of grasses and crops, with knock-on impacts for winter animal feed and yield, and the implications of flooding and heavy rainfall for run-off and erosion of soil and for field operations, like harvesting and drilling. ....

RABI s five year strategy is underpinned by its vision that ‘no farmer should ever face adversity alone’.
“The results have exceeded our expectations and astounded many, including one research centre who advised us a response rate of over a couple of thousand was unattainable. We are hugely grateful to every organisation and individual who has supported the Big Farming Survey.

More than 15,000 people in England and Wales have responded to the largest survey to date on wellbeing in agriculture.
Farm charity Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (Rabi) created the Big Farming Survey with researchers from the University of Exeter.
Alicia Chivers, CEO of Rabi, said the huge engagement had been astounding.
“We are hugely grateful to every organisation and individual who has supported the Big Farming Survey.
“Our objective was to deliver statistically valid findings that encompass the diversity in farming today. We have more than achieved this. The results will provide a true reflection of the pressures and the impacts that people are facing, both from a personal and business perspective.” ....
