President awards Norwich Emergency Medical Services students special coins in Jackman Hall meeting
When a fire burned through a Northfield house last month, leaving several residents injured, Norwich students working as first responders put the service-before-self into immediate practice.
As Vermont Capitol Police Chief Matthew Romei ’98 recounted in a letter to Norwich President Dr. Mark Anarumo, Corps of Cadets Col. Michael Titus and Dean of Students, Martha Mathis, about 150 emergency responders from more than 30 agencies answered a call to a March 25 house fire off of Little Northfield Road in Northfield, Vermont. Romei said the fire response was complicated, involving many university alumni and five current students.
Life, and lifesaving, go on
Marking return of campus activity, spring blood drive returns, collecting 165 pints
As in-room quarantine ended and campus crackled with energy last week, dozens of Norwich University students, faculty and staff members marched into the Vermont National Guard Armory hoping to help save lives.
On Feb. 25, the Center for Civic Engagement held its spring blood drive, partnering with the American Red Cross of Northern New England. Plumley Armory is serving as a five-days-a-week COVID-19 testing center this semester, having administered more than 11,000 COVID-19 tests since January. So, the blood drive moved across campus.
As in the fall, Civic Scholars Kevin Sloan, a junior, Hadlee Wolfram, a sophomore and Aidan Grady, a freshman organized and ran it.

Therapy dogs, curling coming for the weekend; dining options to increase
Progress against the coronavirus has been dramatic and steady, Norwich President Mark C. Anarumo said Thursday. An on-campus COVID-19-positive case count that had been 65 on Jan. 27 and 42 on Feb. 8 was down to five. Ten people were isolated in quarantine on campus as of Thursday, down from 91 on Feb. 5.
Mask wearing, physical distancing and handwashing is paying off, Anarumo said in his Update from the Hill video. Anarumo said Norwich had administered 11,249 COVID-19 tests since January, a number he called remarkable. He lauded Career and Internship Center Director Nicole DiDomenico, who’s been running the Plumley Armory testing center, Nursing Director Paulette Thabault, who’s led the testing, and the many volunteers who’ve helped them.
