2021-05 - South African materials technology used in CERN's ATLAS experiment

26 May 2021 - Wits University
The use of South African technology to produce high tech electronic components will cost five times less than importing the technology from the United States.
A team of scientists from Wits Institute for Collider Particle Physics (ICPP) and iThemba LABS in collaboration with the South African firm, CERadvance Engineering, have developed an innovative solution that will provide a cost-effective solution to the European experiment, ATLAS.
The team investigated the design and production of ceramic cylinders that could be used in the design of a new Low Voltage Power Supply (LVPS) of the ATLAS detector, which is situated along the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The LVPS will power the next generation of experimental electronics in the ATLAS detector. The locally designed ceramic cylinders would help in reducing heat in the LVPS during the operation of the detector. ....

Gauteng premier David Makhura’s advisory committee on Covid-19 has warned the risk of a resurgence is rising in some parts of the province, and it is vital to step up non-medical interventions to slow transmission of the coronavirus. The situation is particularly worrying in Sedibeng, 50km south of Johannesburg, it said. ....

South Africa remains highly vulnerable to third wave, expert warns

South Africa cannot afford to get complacent when it comes to Covid-19.
That’s the warning from health experts, who believe a third wave of infections is likely to hit the country in the coming months.
Professor Bruce Mellado, director of the Institute for Collider Particle Physics at Wits University, said current data collected, using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithm, showed that SA remained highly vulnerable.

Risk of Covid-19 third wave within next two weeks is low, say SA researchers

Risk of Covid-19 third wave within next two weeks is low, say SA researchers
But it is too soon to tell if more social interaction and religious gatherings over the Easter weekend seeded an increase in Covid-19 transmission

The risk of a third wave of coronavirus infections in SA in the coming fortnight is low, according to an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm designed by a consortium led by Wits University.
“The data is telling us the probability of a third wave is low, and is unlikely within the next two weeks, but these algorithms are not crystal balls,” said Wits Institute for Collider Particle Physics director Bruce Mellado, who is a member of Gauteng premier David Makhura’s advisory council on Covid-19. ....
