Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Shining a spotlight on children's mental health

Published: 5/10/2021 4:31:50 PM
Callie Boisvert and Abbey Shumway are willing to share their struggles with mental health. But that wasn’t always the case.
Boisvert was bullied in her last two years of middle school and it led to what she called a suicidal depression. Instead of discussing with others how she was feeling, Boisvert kept it buried deep inside.
“I had no idea how to handle it,” she said. “I never really fully recovered from it. It affects me so much to this day.”
But Boisvert has seen changes in herself, especially after she started to be more open about how she was feeling – to her parents, friends and a counselor. ....

In a broad discussion of potential policing reforms Monday night, elected officials and law enforcement authorities from the Monadnock Region called for greater investment in mental health care while also sparring over issues of police accountability.
State Sen. Jay Kahn, D-Keene, moderated the virtual town hall, which came as New Hampshire lawmakers are drafting the state’s 2022-23 budget and after some have been accused of weakening reforms that a state panel on policing recommended last summer.
The event organized by the Cheshire County Democrats focused largely on those recommendations from the Commission on Law Enforcement Accountability, Community and Transparency (LEACT). Gov. Chris Sununu, who convened the commission in mid-June after a Minneapolis police officer murdered George Floyd, endorsed its nearly 50 proposals last September. ....

A $32 million settlement in a class-action suit filed by six New Hampshire residents with psychiatric disabilities against the state is a milestone case for New Hampshire, according to local interested parties who have been following it.
“I think it’s a positive outcome for the citizens, shoring up services that are more humane and less costly than institutionalized care, and I think that’s good for the people of the state,” said Phillip Wyzik, CEO of Monadnock Family Services, which provides mental health services for the Monadnock area.
