Transit Advocates Succeed in Killing Pittsburgh Shuttle Proposal (Maybe)


A grassroots advocacy group in Pittsburgh recently managed to drive a large stake through the heart of a proposal for a transportation corridor that would rely on autonomous shuttles.
But killing one ill-conceived micromobility project doesn’t mean that micromobility is a bad idea. On the contrary, the growth of on-demand minibus service and electric-powered personal transport shows that it has a promising future ahead of it. New York City is taking another step into that future with the arrival of the city’s first e-scooter sharing network in a section of the Bronx.
Meanwhile, on the macromobility front, one of the commuter rail services that got sidelined by COVID-19, New Mexico’s Rail Runner, will resume service between New Mexico’s largest city, its suburbs and its state capital this month, and San Diego reached an environmental milestone last month when it retired the last of its diesel buses. ....

By most counts Pittsburgh is short some 20,000 units of affordable housing, and the number continues to grow. Meeting the need, while always a challenge, seems even more daunting against the backdrop of vast housing insecurity revealed by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The city’s Housing Opportunity Fund, or HOF, is often a final stop for affordable housing projects; through its Rental Gap Program it can make the kind of last-piece-of-the-puzzle loans nonprofit developers need to make their numbers work. Earlier this month, the fund’s advisory board debated such a situation at Flats on Forward, at the corner of Forward and Murray Avenues. ....

Pittsburgh City Council is set to vote Monday on a 2021 budget that doesn’t make any of the cuts to police funding that some residents have repeatedly requested.
The $564 million spending plan introduced Nov. 9 by Mayor Bill Peduto doesn’t increase taxes. However, if federal coronavirus relief packages are not approved, more than 630 jobs nearly $26 million in cuts will need to be made in July to keep the city afloat, officials said. ....
