In Moldova, a snap election could help President Maia Sandu finish what she started

In Europe, Maia Sandu’s election as president of Moldova on 1 November 2020 led to a collective sigh of relief.
Sandu, a progressive and worldly former prime minister who wants to forge closer links between Moldova and the European Union, defeated the incumbent Igor Dodon, who is openly pro-Kremlin and visited Russia around 30 times during his four-year term as president.
When the result was announced, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated her on social media and said that European-supported work to tackle corruption and improve the rule of law could now be restarted after languishing under Dodon.
Like other nations in south-eastern Europe, Moldova has a political and cultural divide between those that look eastwards and those who look west. Sandu galvanised voters in that latter camp, who see Moldova’s future with Europe rather than with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. ....

Moldovan President Maia Sandu calls early election for July 11

Moldova s President Maia Sandu announced plans on Wednesday to dissolve parliament, calling for early elections on July 11.
Moldovans can now elect their next leadership. They are no longer hostages to predatory interests. I thank all our partners for your trust and support for Moldova s democratic future, Sandu tweeted.
It came after Moldova s Constitutional Court cancelled a state of emergency meant to stop the spread of COVID-19.
The 60-day state of emergency blocked the pro-Western president from calling for early elections.
“Through this decision we have paved the way for citizens to be able to choose a new Parliament that will serve the interests of the country and the people,” Sandu said after the court’s ruling. ....

Moldova's Constitutional Court says president can dissolve parliament

Sandu has said a majority of Moldovans want an early parliamentary vote.
Sandu’s pro-Russian predecessor, Igor Dodon, urged that the court’s decision not be recognized and demanded the resignation of the judges, saying there was an attempt at a “constitutional coup.”
Confrontation between Sandu and the opposition-dominated parliament escalated when the assembly twice refused to consider Sandu’s nominees for the post of prime minister.
The president is allowed constitutionally to dissolve parliament if it twice fails to appoint a new government within the space of 45 days.

Moldova's president must wait a while longer for snap election

Moldova took a step closer towards a snap election on April 15 when the country’s Constitutional Court ruled that President Maia Sandu is free to dissolve parliament. However, she will have to wait until May 31 – when the current state of emergency is due to end – before doing so.
Moldova’s Constitutional Court ruled on April 15 that the country’s president, Maia Sandu, is free to dissolve parliament and call a snap election.
The ruling follows a series of unsuccessful attempts by various parliamentary groupings to form a government.
“This is an important decision not just for constitutional justice in our country, but for the state of Moldova and its citizens,” said Sandu, who personally pleaded her case before the court. ....
