No injuries were reported after a fire destroyed an apartment building in Oxford.Chief Gary Sparks of the Oxford Fire Department says fire crews were dispatched to 1030 Corbin Street near McCullars Lane about 8:45 p.m. Saturday.Firefighters found flames coming from the middle of an apartment building.The fire quickly spread to the entire structure.Sparks said 14 people were inside nine apartments at the time of the fire. Everyone escaped unharmed. A tenth apartment was unoccupied.Sparks told WVTM 13 News that the building appears to be a total loss.There s no indication of any suspicious activity connected to this fire, Sparks said.An investigation into the cause of the fire continue ....

Free drive-through COVID testing in Oxford Tuesday


Free coronavirus testing will be available at a drive-through site in Oxford on Tuesday, Calhoun County emergency management officials announced last week. 
Testing will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oxford Civic Center on McCullars Lane, according to the announcement. The testing is free to anyone who is showing symptoms of the virus or has been exposed to the virus. 
A similar testing site in Anniston last week drew more than 200 participants, emergency officials said.
 
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 7,872 people in Calhoun County have been diagnosed with COVID-19, according to numbers released Monday by the Alabama Department of Public Health. The virus has killed 129 people in the county. ....

UPDATED: RMC warns ambulances away as COVID-19 fills ICU beds

Regional Medical Center in Anniston is urging ambulance crews to take patients to other hospitals because COVID-19 has filled the hospital’s intensive care facilities to capacity, the hospital’s CEO said Monday.
“Our ICU, based on the ability to staff, is full,” said Louis Bass, CEO of RMC.
For the past two weeks, Calhoun County has recorded more than 100 new cases of coronavirus per day, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. It’s the fastest the virus has spread here since the pandemic began.  ....
