LAS CRUCES - The governor has tasked the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission with producing a 50-year water plan. Here in southern New Mexico, Elephant Butte Irrigation District is already decades into implementing most of the measures discussed in the plan. From Caballo Reservoir at the head of the District, through canals and drains, across miles of farmland, the District’s members and employees have implemented smart water management, sustainability and equity. It is through these efforts that our agricultural communities continue to thrive, producing food, feed and fiber for New Mexico and beyond. ....

Some Borderland farmers benefited from recent rain, others didn’t
ANTHONY, New Mexico The recent rain has had many of us rejoicing, including plenty of farmers. But not all are reaping the same rewards.
“It’s helped us because we need it,” Adolfo Enriquez, owner of Enriquez Farms said. “We’re very dry, but it hasn’t helped us because it’s postponed a lot of our work last week. I think we worked one maybe two days.”
Enriquez told ABC-7 they’re at a standstill now until the wetness dries out. On their alfalfa, cotton and grass farm in Anthony, the rain would have been most beneficial going to Elephant Butte so they could have seen a larger water allotment this season. ....

Nearly 20 farms in southern New Mexico are one step closer to receiving state grants to stop using groundwater for a year as part of a water management pilot project for the Lower Rio Grande.

Grants considered by the Interstate Stream Commission last week ranged from $9,000 to $90,000, and totaled more than $500,000.
The Office of the State Engineer has certified that the farms, trusts and corporations have valid water rights. The staff will now verify land deeds before signing the grant agreements, which represent about 1,600 acres. ....
