Over 500 jobs at risk as Nestlé announces closure of its Fawdon factory in the UK
Nestlé Confectionery has announced it plans to close its factory in Fawdon in north east England and streamline its production line in York - resulting in 573 job losses.
The move is part of a £29.4m investment at its factories in York and Halifax intended to support the company’s long-term success in an increasingly competitive category.
The proposed changes would create a more efficient manufacturing footprint and, in turn, allow greater strategic investment in Nestlé’s biggest confectionery brands, the company said in a statement. ....

Bosch subsidiary is investing £1.6m in expanding in York.
HIGH skilled jobs are being created in York with the £1.6m expansion of a centre supporting the development of smart transport technology.
The Department for International Trade has announced that ETAS, a global solutions provider for the automotive industry, will be expanding in York.
The move will create 11 new high-skilled jobs in the self-drive vehicle industry, with future potential to increase this to more than 40 positions.
In September 2019, ETAS Ltd, a Bosch subsidiary, agreed a 15-year lease on one of York s largest available office buildings, Alexander House, in Hospital Fields Road, with office accommodation over three floors.  ....

A further £9.2m of investment is planned for its factory in Halifax which is set to absorb much of the work done in the North East, No job cuts are planned for Halifax as yet and Nestle would not rule out the creation of roles as the two year process unfolds.

The move has been condemned by unions the GMB and Unite who described the cuts as sickening given that workers had remained in the factory during the pandemic,

Retail boom in York suburbs amid working from home revolution


YORK’S suburbs are enjoying a retail boom in the wake of the pandemic and the working from home revolution.
While some city centre shops are lying empty for months or even years, suburban retail units are being snapped up within days of becoming available to let, says commercial property agent John Hornsby.
He said demand had become so great that there was a shortage of properties to offer to potential occupants, and lettings had been concluded in record time in locations including Acomb, Burton Stone Lane, New Earswick and Haxby.
