Low-income families have a high awareness of healthy diets but can t afford good quality and nutritious food, new research shows.
The University of York study, in partnership with N8Agrifood, showed that participants tried to eat as much fruit and vegetables as they could within financial constraints, avoiding processed food wherever possible. But there was widespread acknowledgement that processed food was often more accessible than healthy options because of its lower cost.
The researchers said that while the diets of low-income households have been subject to much scrutiny and debate, there is currently limited evidence in the UK on the diet quality and food practices of households reporting food insecurity and food bank use. ....

Families have high awareness of healthy eating but many low-income families struggle to access good quality and nutritious food, reveals a new research.

Hundreds of students join Unilancr freelance platform


Niall Clowes, of Unilancer which is being trialled in York.
A DIGITAL platform to help York employers and students collaborate is being trialled.
Unilancr, which launched in November 2020, has more than 300 students signed up to offer their skills to employers on a freelance basis.
It connects businesses to a previously untapped pool of skilled local university students, and is free for employers to join, post a job, and search through candidates profiles.
Meanwhile, students can search and apply for jobs, which utilise their academic and commercial skills gained from university studies and which fit in with their timetable.
Students can work with different employers, helping to expand their network and gain contacts for future job prospects in a competitive market. ....

Scientists kick off £6m project to investigate role food systems play in health of children and environment
A new £6m study into food and health led by four UK universities has begun with the aim to create healthier future generations and a healthier planet.
Researchers will look at healthy eating interventions in schools and nurseries, food retailing, food procurement and farming to address issues such as childhood obesity, sustainability in agriculture and global warming.
The five-year research programme called ‘Transformations to Regenerative Food Systems (TReFS) will also look at how regenerative farming – which promotes biosystems health – can help achieve both healthier populations and environment in the future. ....
