Hundreds of Covid-related fines given to town's residents

RECENT months have been the ‘most challenging period’ in the entire pandemic for police officers in Barnsley, according to force bosses who revealed more than 500 fines for Covid-related rule breaches have been dished out.
Despite three national lockdowns, police demand has remained at a ‘normal level’, according to a report obtained by the Chronicle.
However, enforcement considerably increased from October 2020 - when 16 fixed penalty notices were issued - rising to 62 in November, 178 in December, 128 in January 2021 and 148 in February.
“As was anticipated, Covid-tagged incidents spiked as the national lockdown was once again instigated in January,” the report added.
“In recent weeks, these have started to reduce in volume, suggesting that the ongoing easing of restrictions may reduce the number of alleged breach reports. ....

A FORMER leader of the statutory body representing police officers has launched a withering attack on the appointment of a police commissioner’s chief officer, saying it would take the force “back to the dark days”.
Mike Stubbs, who was chair of North Yorkshire Police Federation from 2014 to 2017, has questioned commissioner Julia Mulligan’s decision to hand the force’s former solicitor Simon Dennis the £90,000-a-year job as the commissioner’s chief executive and monitoring officer.
His comments come just weeks after Mrs Mulligan told the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Panel that Mr Dennis had been the outstanding candidate to apply for the role “by some way”. The panel approved Mrs Mulligan’s appointment after Mr Dennis told them he had extensive experience of challenging senior figures. ....
