Nine-month-baby beaten by mother: Mother gives reasons for her actions

The mother of a baby was arrested in connection with a video circulating on social media showing a baby being brutally beaten.
Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the incident was reported from the Jaffna - Ariyale - Navaladi area.
The video shows the nine-month-old baby being beaten by a 24-year-old mother with a stick, then dragged into a room and beaten again with a stick, where the baby cries in agony.
The mother was arrested and the baby was taken into police custody when the Jaffna Police went to the house and conducted investigations into the video which was circulated on social media. ....

The Jaffna Magistrate has ordered to obtain a psychiatric report of the 24-year-old mother who was arrested for assaulting her infant in the Navaladi area in Ariyalai, Jaffna.
In addition, the Magistrate has ordered that a forensic report be submitted on the 9th regarding the injuries sustained to the baby.
The Magistrate had also ordered that both be placed in probationary care until the 9th.
The video, circulated on social media, showed the mother beating her 9-month-old baby with a stick, then dragging him into a room and beating him again with a stick, while the baby was crying in agony. ....

Lanka cabinet seeks details about Chinese-contracted energy project

Colombo [Sri Lanka], February 22 (ANI): Sri Lankan Cabinet has sought more details about the renewable energy project, whose contract was recently handed over to a Chinese company, in three islands off Jaffna.
This comes after India registered a protest over the selection of the company to execute the project. The islands concerned are the Delft Island, Analativu and Nainativu, the Daily Mirror reported.
The islands, separated by the Palk Strait from India, are in close proximity to India s coast.
It was also reported that the energy project s local partner, the Ceylon Electricity Board, has finalised matters related to the project by identifying lands for the joint venture with Etechwin of China. The funds for the project are to come from the Asian Development Bank. ....

Delft, Analativu and Nainativu Islands to China, no change in decision

Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila has stated that there is no change in the decision taken to hand over three northern islands belonging to Sri Lanka to three Chinese companies for a joint energy project to be implemented with China.
He was responding to a question raised by a journalist at a media briefing at the Government Information Department today. (Video of the Ministers response in English at the end of the Article)
The Cabinet had approved the allocation of Delft, Analativu and Nainativu Islands for the project on January 18.
