OTTAWA, ON, June 4, 2021 /CNW/ - Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people face intolerable inequities – something that has been made worse by the COVID19 pandemic in communities from coast to coast to coast. The Government of Canada is taking concrete action to address these inequities by supporting, and working with, organizations that empower Indigenous women, girls, 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, and other underrepresented people to overcome the challenges they face and fully participate in all aspects of economic and social life.
Today the Minister of Northern Affairs, the Honourable Daniel Vandal, on behalf of the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, announced over $3 million in funding for six organizations advancing gender equality in Northern communities. ....

Yukon justice system failing Indigenous women, say advocates

Protests were held in two Yukon communities Monday calling for urgent action to protect Indigenous women from violence.
The protests, in Watson Lake and Whitehorse, were in response to an alleged assault on Ashley Magun, an Indigenous woman, in Watson Lake last summer.
The man accused, David Kotchea of Watson Lake, was scheduled to be at a preliminary hearing for the case in territorial court on Monday. 
He faces five charges, including two counts of aggravated assault, one count of break-and-enter and two counts of failing to comply with a promise to appear. He was also scheduled to enter a plea on one count of breaching probation. ....

Women's groups in Yukon disappointed 'unfounded' sex assault project terminated


Women’s groups are
angry that talks meant to revive a committee reviewing unresolved sexual assault complaints in Yukon have ended before its findings could be presented.
A report outlining how Mounties in the territory investigate sex assaults was to go to the federal government in March.
