The board will begin at 6 p.m. in closed session to conference with labor negotiators. In open session at 7 p.m., the board will honor 47 district employees in honor of “classified school employees week” and “day of the teacher,” hold a public hearing on a request to rename the Yucca Valley High School lecture hall in honor of the late John W. Frakes Jr., discuss potential funding for the school facility modernization program, and revise the district’s English learner master plan. Safe School Desert Cities supports Coachella Valley LGBT students

All-volunteer organization,
Safe Schools Desert Cities has been empowering local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex youth (LGBTQI+), their allies and GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) advisors since 2012. The organization works to create opportunities that foster individual growth as well as create community. These goals are achieved by providing education, guidance, advocacy, resources, recreational activities and opportunities for self-expression.
While the organization has been mostly dark during distance learning, Safe School plans to resume all its normal operations when school reopens. This will include events like the
Pride Prom, the
Rainbow Youth Summit and connecting with GSA advisors.
The organization provides one liaison to each school district, periodically meeting with the schools’ GSA advisors, learning about the needs of the schools and providing a calendar of events. Safe Schools also provides financial support for T-shirt ....

At last night’s meeting, the board approved a one-year contract from 2021-2022 for Interim Superintendent Doug Weller with an annual salary of nearly $200,000. Director of Elementary Curriculum Julie Howard announced that all district students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grades will receive free backpacks on the last week of school filled with educational resources and parent-student activities to keep students learning through the summer. Assistant Superintendent Amy Woods announced that the nutritional services department has distributed 3 million meals to students and their families since the beginning of the pandemic. ....
