Neighbor helps woman in need of liver transplant By Bill Althaus The Examiner Miriam Keith first met her new neighbor, Katlyn Bokhoven, when she lost her new dog, Akira, shortly after moving to Independence last December. When the puppy ran away, Keith suggested that Bokhoven place some of her clothes in the yard, in hopes the runaway would follow the scent home. It worked like a charm. But that is far from the most significant role Keith played in the life of Bokhoven, who returned from a recent vacation in Mexico suffering with leg cramps. Bokhoven was soon moved from hospital to hospital, and last week underwent a liver transplant that was made possible, in part, through hours of time on the phone by Keith, who helped her get insurance under the federal continuation-of-coverage law commonly called COBRA. ....
The Examiner During the last nearly quarter of a century Truman High School has gone through countless changes – from a renovation in the classrooms, auditorium, band room and gymnasium to the new football and baseball fields, and the new softball and tennis complex that will be open this fall. But there has been one constant, as Marilyn Reinhard, a 1969 Truman graduate, has assisted the school s activities directors, beginning with Gary Bressman and running through Eric Holm and Daniel Bieser. After a 24-year career that included everything from coordinating player physicals and collecting tickets at games and school plays, to taking temperatures and checking checking on COVID protocol, Reinhard is retiring this month. ....

Her mother was on the phone, visiting with a member of the PTA when young Lily decided to create something special. Let s see, said Letchworth, who is a winner of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition, where her oil painting of a Native American/modern day woman of Native American heritage will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for a year, my mom was on the phone, and she thought I was asleep. ....

That’s when she found bliss – perfect happiness, contentment, joy – in the world of chocolate. She teamed up with her mother, Pat Jarstad, to open Bliss Chocolatier last month and has found it combines the best of three things she loves – art, science and food. “The candy is pretty and it tastes good,” said 6-year-old Nora Turnbush, who was visiting Bliss along with her brother John, sister Sophia and mother Jodi. ....

We have so much more room than we did when we had our Christmas store at our building, and when you can take your time and look at all our presents, it just puts you in the Christmas spirit.” ....
