St. Vincent Meta-Documentary ‘The Nowhere Inn’ Acquired by IFC Films Film that premiered at Sundance in 2020 stars and was written by Annie Clark and Carrie BrownsteinBrian Welk | March 1, 2021 @ 3:50 PM Minka Farthing Kohl/Sundance IFC Films has acquired from Topic Studios the North American rights to “The Nowhere Inn,” the film starring, co-written by and centered on indie rock guitarist St. Vincent. Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, wrote the screenplay with “Portlandia” star and fellow musician Carrie Brownstein. The film is a genre-bending mockumentary of sorts that premiered at Sundance in the Midnight section back in 2020. IFC will now release “The Nowhere Inn” later this fall.
The Nowhere Inn, a movie written by Carrie Brownstein (of Portlandia and Sleater-Kinney) and starring both her and St. Vincent (a.k.a. Annie Clark) as exaggerated versions of themselves. The movie is about the two of them trying to make a documentary about St. Vincent, but—as Deadline describes it—they “quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives.” Deadline also specifically notes that it’s a “metafictional account,” in case the idea of two artists making a movie about themselves making a movie about themselves wasn’t a tip-off.
