Russia's most (geographically) EXTREME places

Russia’s most (geographically) EXTREME places
Legion Media
Coming to Russia, you soon realise that it is a little more extreme than you expected. This is especially true of its geography: just when you think the country has reached its limits, it always goes a little further. Here are eight places in Russia where you really can take life to extremes!
Furthest North: Dikson
Robert Prascenis/Sputnik
The furthest place above the Arctic Circle that Russians make their homes is not the city of Murmansk, or even the snow-battered former mining town of Norilsk. Further north than either of these places, on the edge of the Taymyr Peninsula in Russia’s extreme north, is the Kara Sea port village of Dikson. ....

Not NATO, But Sweden's Air Force Would Have Survived a Soviet Attack, No Problem

In the event of World War III, even neutral Sweden was prepared for a fight.
Here s What You Need to Remember: Taken all together, a single Bas 90 base complex would be spread of a large area, and have several kilometers of usable flight strips and taxiways in total, creating a larger target area that was also more discreetly camouflaged into the road system.
Although Sweden does not share a border with Russia, the Scandinavian country is a mere 500 kilometers or about 330 miles from Kaliningrad, the Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania. Kaliningrad, also Russia’s westernmost point, remains ice-free in winter and thanks to these two geographical features, the formerly German territory hosts the Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet headquarters, as well as two air bases. ....

Russia Just Repaired the Largest Amphibious Assault Hovercraft Ever

Zubr-class
Yevgeny Kocheshkov, the largest currently in service in the world. It is designed for loading Marines (maritime infantry) from a rough or prepared beach, with their combat gear, and landing them on a beachhead while providing fire support.
As with other commercial hovercraft, the Project 1232.2
Yevgeny Kocheshkov utilizes an air cushion design that allows it to move across the beach and even bypass small obstacles such as ditches and trenches, while it can also traverse minefields and even move across swamp areas. About 70 percent of the world’s coastlines are considered suitable for an air-cushion amphibious assault ship to conduct a landing operation. ....

This Warship Is the Future of the Russian Navy

Boiky and
Steregushchiy returned to their homeport of Baltiysk following a long-distance deployment mission in the North Atlantic.
The Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet said the two vessels successfully accomplished the mission, which included multiple drills.
During their deployment that lasted seventy-seven days, the corvettes
Boiky and
Steregushchiy covered a total distance of almost 9,500 nautical miles,” Baltic Fleet spokesman Roman Martov told Tass earlier this week. “In the Atlantic Ocean, the warships’ crews held drills for air, anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) defense and practiced assigned tasks.”
During those exercises, the crews of the two corvettes dealt with the tasks of searching for, detecting and destroying a notional enemy’s submarine with anti-submarine armament in interaction with the crews of Ka-27 helicopters, which operated from the vessels. ....
