SPRINGFIELD Madison County Transit is receiving $165,000 for improvements to the Confluence Trail.
The grant was one of seven totaling $885,300 announced Wednesday by Gov. J.B. Pritzker to help communities develop and improve bike path facilities.
“As we head into the warmer months, families across Illinois will spend more time outdoors on the state’s bike paths,” said Pritzker. “These grants provide critical funding for local governments to develop or improve existing bike baths, a good investment in safe transportation that also expands local recreation opportunities.”
The Madison County project will receive $165,000 for a half-mile trail improvement that begins near the westerly end of the pedestrian bridge over Wood River and ends just west of the wooden structure under a conveyor. ....

MCT starts commemorative tree, bench program for trails

PONTOON BEACH Madison County Transit has launched the MCT Trails Commemorative Tree & Bench Program.
The new program provides way for residents and trail users to purchase a tree or bench to be placed along an MCT trail to honor a loved one, or recognize an organization, civic group or business.
The MCT trail system includes nine major trails spanning 137 miles, ranging from trails through old-growth forest and unsurpassed views of the Mississippi River, to urban trails connecting parks to outside areas.
“For years we’ve heard from trail users who want to make a contribution to the MCT Trails while commemorating a loved one or an organization,” said MCT Managing Director SJ Morrison. “This program allows residents to become more engaged with the MCT Trails, while providing funds for trail amenities such as benches and trees, which have also been requested.� ....

EDWARDSVILLE Felony criminal charges recently filed by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office include:
• Peter J. Liparoto, 49, of Alton, was charged Jan. 13 with aggravated battery, a Class 2 felony. The case was presented by the Alton Police Department. According to court documents, on Jan. 4 Liparoto struck a private security guard at Alton Memorial Hospital. Bail was set at $25,000.
• Mark A. Foster, 45, of Alton, was charged Jan. 13 with aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony. The case was presented by the Alton Police Department. According to court documents, on Aug. 24Foster struck a man at Russell Commons Park, injuring the victim. Bail was set at $25,000. ....
