Long COVID places 'huge burden' on survivors' families, new research suggests

 E-Mail
A new study by Cardiff University in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire has revealed the huge secondary burden placed on those closest to people living with Long Covid.
The researchers surveyed more than 700 Covid-19 survivors along with their partners and close relatives to understand for the first time the impact of the disease on families as a whole.
The findings, published today in
BMJ Open, suggest family quality of life is being severely affected and a major system of support is needed for both survivors - and those closest to them.
Survivors and their families spoke of the huge impact on their lives and backed calls for more support. ....

UK budget offers a few crumbs for research, but no Horizon Europe money
There are tweaks to the talent visa, but science funding ‘notably scarce’, while there’s no mention of how the government will meet the costs of EU science participation
Visa fine-tuning to create radically simplified bureaucracy for high-skilled applications , with quicker processes for entrepreneurs, was a research highlight in the UK’s annual budget on Wednesday.
But science groups are left perplexed by the missing billions of pounds earmarked for participation in the EU’s Horizon Europe research programme.
“Today’s budget does not provide any clarity on the source of funding for association to Horizon Europe, expected to be around £2 billion a year, which may mean significant funds will need to be found from core R&D budgets,” said Tim Bradshaw, chief executive of the Russell Group of the UK’s top research universities. ....

Scientists find strongest evidence yet of 'migration gene'

Credit: Andrew Dixon
A team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Cardiff University say they have found the strongest evidence yet of a migration gene in birds.
The team identified a single gene associated with migration in peregrine falcons by tracking them via satellite technology and combining this with genome sequencing.
They say their findings add further evidence to suggest genetics has a strong role to play in the distance of migration routes.
The study, published today in the journal
Nature, also looks at the predicted effect of climate change on migration - and how this might interact with evolutionary factors. ....
