Public Meetings This Week: Fed Grant Workshop Today for Nonprofits Helping Needy

The public has opportunities to shape policy this week as various Haverhill boards meet. In the interest of transparency in government, WHAV provides this list of upcoming meetings every week.
Haverhill nonprofits serving the needy that may be eligible to share in the city’s allocation of federal Community Development Block Grant money have an opportunity today to receive assistance preparing applications.
Community Development Director Andrew K. Herlihy said the city encourages as many applications as possible, but grants are limited under law to 15% of the total federal allocation or around $155,000. ....

Rep. Vargas to Participate in Legislative Briefing Wednesday on Bill Requiring Free School Meals

Haverhill Rep. Andy X. Vargas participates in a legislative briefing Wednesday morning on a bill mandating schools “make breakfast and lunch available at no charge to each attending student.”
Besides lead House sponsor Vargas, the online briefing is organized by The Feed Kids Coalition, led by Project Bread, and Senate sponsor Sal DiDomenico. Speakers also include Project Bread CEO Erin McAleer, Athol-Royalston Regional School District Superintendent Darcy Fernandes Rebecca Wood, mother of an eight-year-old student.
The universal school meals bill requires local school districts to seek federal funding, but requires the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education pick up costs not covered by the federal government. ....

Groveland, Merrimac and West Newbury to Develop Plan for In-Person School Return

Groveland, Merrimac and West Newbury’s working group to determine how Pentucket Regional School District will return to five-day, in-person instruction this spring, met for the first time yesterday.
Members of what’s being called the “100% Pentucket” initiative noted social distancing is the “single greatest barrier that must be addressed in order for Pentucket schools to return to fully in-person learning.” A statement explained there is not enough room in existing buildings to accommodate all students at six-foot increments. The working group will review all options and guidelines, including the possibility of three-foot social distancing. ....
