Mother of AG Perarivalan, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has appealed to Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin to release him on parole amid the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the state and in its prisons.

Former CBI officer K Ragothaman, who was the Chief Investigating Officer in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, died on Wednesday, police sources said.
The veteran, 76, was admitted to a hospital in Chennai last week for Covid-19 treatment and breathed his last this morning, hospital sources said.
Ragothaman was the CIO in the CBI s Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed the killing of Gandhi on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, during an election rally, by a female LTTE suicide bomber. ....

Ex-CBI officer who probed Rajiv Gandhi assassination dies of COVID-19 in Chennai

Former Central Bureau of Investigation Superintendent of Police K Ragothaman died in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 76.

He tested positive for COVID-19 a few days back and was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai where he breathed his last. He is survived by four children while his wife died some years ago.

Ragothaman was part of the Special Investigation Team that probed the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. 

He also authored several books on the high-profile assassination case and crime investigations. ....

With no real action being taken regarding the release of A.G. Perarivalan and six others in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, the state government is undoing years of Jayalalithaa’s work towards championing Tamil Nadu s federal rights.

Seven years have passed since former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa made an important announcement. On February 19, 2014, Jayalalithaa told the state assembly that she would release all the seven convicts imprisoned in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case if the Centre did not respond in three days. The announcement was a reflection of how persistent a state should be in protecting its federal rights. She was equally determined when it came to other issues, including the Cauvery dispute, NEET and the Mullaperiyar Dam. ....
