Even with the dire pandemic statistics coming out of the world s second-most populated country, Balkrishna Industries Ltd. (BKT), Ceat Ltd., and Sun Tyre & Wheel Systems all report operations continue. Sun-TWS reported operations at 100 percent capacity while BKT said operations are running smoothly with an average of 95 percent capacity. (BKT) said all of its plants are running smoothly with average 95% capacity, quashing rumors that the catastrophic surge in COVID-19 cases in India has significantly impacted tire production at its plants. In a letter issued to industry stakeholders, Rajiv Poddar, managing director of BKT, said the country has not stopped production at any of its plants and it does not foresee any disruption in the near future. In case there is any disruption, you would hear it first from BKT as an official communication, Mr. Poddar wrote. BKT ranks No. 37 in global tire sales, based on 2019 figures of $686 million in sales. ....

The decision came on a day the state recorded 985 Covid deaths, its highest daily toll since the start of the pandemic. While public health minister Rajesh Tope said all cabinet ministers were unanimous that the curbs be extended to check the spread of Covid-19, NGOs working for the poor and representatives of the retail sector and restaurants said the restrictions were having a serious adverse impact and they had expected some relief. ....
